Lisa Obst
Beerenberg
As a WHS Coordinator, I’ve taken the lead in embedding a safety-first culture at the foundational stage of our organisation’s WHS journey. My approach is grounded in education, empowerment, and compliance — helping individuals understand their duty of care and responsibilities under the WHS Act, while guiding them to take ownership of safety in their roles.
I’ve worked to bring people along on this journey — navigating diverse personalities, overcoming resistance, and building trust — all while maintaining a clear focus on compliance, onboarding, and continuous improvement. By applying the hierarchy of control and promoting practical, proactive solutions, I’ve helped shift WHS from a procedural obligation to a shared value.
My goal has always been to lead by example, foster accountability, and create a workplace where safety is second nature. I’m proud to nominate myself for the She Inspires in WHS award to celebrate the progress we’ve made and the culture that Beerenberg will continue to build.
What are you nominating them for?
As a WHS Coordinator, I’ve led the development of a safety-first culture from the ground up, helping individuals understand their duty of care and responsibilities under the WHS Act. I’ve worked to bring people on the journey — navigating personalities, overcoming resistance, and building trust — while driving compliance and embedding WHS into everyday practice.
One of my most impactful WHS initiatives followed a serious burn incident involving hot product in Production at Beerenberg. In response, I led a risk assessment and designed then implemented gumboots with gaiters as a targeted control measure for cooks. This practical solution significantly reduced the risk of third-degree burns, demonstrating how swift action and the right PPE can prevent future harm and reinforce a culture of safety.
I lead with purpose and persistence, applying the hierarchy of control to every risk and empowering others to take ownership of safety. I don’t just drive compliance — I build capability and culture. I’m proud to nominate myself for the She Inspires in WHS award to celebrate the progress I have made and the people protected. This is now shared with other businesses to help those with similar hazards.
Serese Selanders
SolusGuard
Serese inspires me because she has blazed a trail of innovation in an industry where fewer than 5% of companies are founded and led by women. She recognized that lone workers needed a better lifeline in dangerous situations - so she acted. Serese developed patented technology, established industry-first strategic satellite partnerships, and created an integrated software and hardware solution that workers actually want to use. Now thousands of workers rely on SolusGuard safety technology daily to ensure that even when working alone, they are protected. What makes Serese truly inspiring is not just the solutions she created, but the bravery it took to imagine them in the first place. She stepped into uncharted territory, proved it could be done, and in doing so, gave hope to every woman who dares to innovate against the odds.
What are you nominating them for?
Serese doesn’t just lead a safety tech company – she is an active participant in the safety industry, inspiring women everywhere she goes. She shares her expertise on global stages, speaking at events such as the NSC Congress and Expo, the World Congress on Parole and Probation, and the ASSP Congress and Expo, as well as through podcasts like Rebranding Safety and Safeopedia. She is deeply involved in organizations that advance women in business and safety, including Women Entrepreneurs of Saskatchewan and the Canadian Women in Occupational Health & Safety Society, where she mentors and supports other founders. Her leadership has also been recognized through numerous awards, including being named to Canadian Occupational Safety’s Top Women in Safety list three years in a row. Serese’s influence extends far beyond her own company, to actively shaping the future of the safety profession itself, and in doing so, she is showing other women what is possible.
